Blinding highlighter and glitter eyeshadow is not for the faint hearted. I myself tend not to dabble too often in the land of sparkle, as it’s not an easy look to pull off. It can make me look like a kid who found their way into their mother’s makeup and for the most part is very OTT. Never mind that glitter has the uncanny ability to find it’s way everywhere and you find yourself picking off glitter in the most unlikely of places weeks later. Highlighter can be just as troublesome. Some are too chalky, too sparkly, too unnatural and some are a combination of all three!
Together, wearing the wrong highlighter and glitter products means you might as well start auditioning for the role of the Tin man. However, when glow royalty Pixi Beauty kindly send you some of their new releases you have to hope they know their stuff!
Aptly named Glow in a Box, I received two Glow-y Gossamer Duos and the Liquid Fairy Lights collection. Obviously being obsessed with highlighters, I was very excited to see whether these could work their glow magic. The liquid glitter eyeshadows though are a completely new product to me. I was apprehensive and dare I say a little scared but the fairy lights were calling to me and I had no choice but to follow them into the world of sparkle.
These Pixi Beauty highlighter powders are so soft and smooth you could be fooled into thinking they’re made of silk. The texture is incredibly creamy with a skin-like finish that makes these highlighters the perfect look for a natural glow. With just the right amount of pigmentation they create a lit from within radiance that very few brands achieve.
There are two duos to choose from, Delicate Dew and Subtle Sunrise. Delicate Dew has peachy pink undertones, whilst Subtle Sunrise contains a pale pink with a light golden yellow that is very reminiscent of the early morning sun. Both duos are gorgeous and would suit a variety of complexions but Delicate Dew would definitely work with medium skin tones whilst Subtle Sunrise would be great for those of us with yellow undertones. People with fair skin needn’t fear either as they are light enough to still create a delicate glow. However, I’m unsure how well they would compliment darker complexions and would seriously recommend you try before you buy!
Neither are shimmery or sparkly so can be used anywhere, anytime to add a touch of glow. For a natural look, I prefer to use a brush and sweep them lightly on my cheek bones. I find my fingers are best to layer the highlighters for a more dramatic finish.
I’m no stranger to solid glitter which you can read about here and it is my go to for a serious party look. However, I’ve never tried a liquid version before. When I first set eyes on the Liquid Fairy Lights, they reminded me of the extremely popular Stila Magnificent Metals. Those little tubes of liquid glitter are so dazzling, I couldn’t wait to see if the Pixi version could compete. They promise super sparkles that light up eyes to create an etheral look. Furthermore, each one is infused with chamomile and rose extracts to soothe and hydrate while you glow.
There are five colours available (top to bottom in the photo):
The applicator is a traditional doe foot and really easy to use. It picks up a lot of pigment and enough product to cover your lids in one go. I apply mine directly to my lids for the most gorgeous glitter finish with zero fallout. They glide on smoothly and set fairly quickly with minimal mess or fuss found with more traditional glitter products. Once applied, I only found minor creasing on my very oily lids after a full day’s wear. The background colour is more richly pigmented in the darker shades but they still all pack a glitter punch.
Due to the more neutral shades, I find the Liquid Fairy Lights can be used during the day time for a natural look with that little something extra. Worn alone or as an eyeshadow topper, they are simply stunning and I’d be surprised if you could stop at just buying one!
