Last Saturday I joined the likes of Britney Spears, Jo Lo and Beyonce in an exclusive club.
No I didn’t release a single. Trust me the world does not need to hear me sing. My friends are still cringing from the time I sang A Whole New World at karaoke and I wasn’t even drunk. No the club I’m talking about is the creating your own perfume club.
Yes I made my own fragrance.
I was a very lucky gal to have been given this as a gift and all I had to do was pick a time and a place. Hosted by The Perfume Studio there are a range of perfume experiences you can choose from at a location that is most suitable for you. Living in Liverpool and being quite lazy I chose the Malmaison Hotel in Manchester and so early Saturday morning I was off on the train channeling my inner celebrity and thinking perfume thoughts.
Held in groups of around 25 we were all greeted with a glass of Cava, whilst Freda our Perfume Studio Stylist provided us with insights into the wonderful world of perfumery and explained how we would blend the different perfume notes to create our own signature fragrances.
All of the blends on offer at the masterclass have been exclusively chosen by the master perfumer Francois Robert and you get to sample each one whilst their properties and ingredients are explained to help guide you to a scent that’s completely unique.
We were taught the importance of each type of note from base notes that provides longevity, middle notes which set the tone of the whole fragrance to top notes which although fleeting are very memorable.
It was so interesting to see how one person would smell a blend and immediately love it whilst another would pull a face of disgust. However, that is the most important thing to remember when creating a perfume, you can choose whichever blends appeal to you. Whether you’re feminine with florals or prefer something more warm and sensual, a personalised fragrance is exactly that, personal.
I went for the “go with the flow” approach to choosing my components. Very un-me but I wanted my perfume to evolve as I created it and not allow myself to try and create a preformed scent that I already had in my mind. Boy was it difficult.
You can pick as many blends as you want but the classic combination is one of each, Base, Middle and Top notes. After smelling each one about a gazillion times, I was as daring as I’ve ever probably been in my life and went for two bases, a middle note and a double dose of top note!
So if you’re ever in the Liverpool area and you pass someone who smells of “An opulent oriental accord that opens with zesty bergamot infused with subtle spices and ends as a warm, sweet, resinous blend along withAn intense yet powdery bouquet of bold florals including jasmine, ylang-ylang with the distinctive scent of alluring tuberose rounded off with full-bodied sandalwood.” then come say hello!!
If creating a unique perfume wasn’t hard enough, it was time to think of a name.
Obviously mine had to be A Love Affair with Beauty but others on my table were very inventive with names such as Me by Me, Selfish and Panty Dropper. Mmmmm doesn’t that sound lovely!!
It was such a fun day made even more special with a walk through the Festival Gardens back in Liverpool. It was unseasonably warm but one of those perfect Autumn days where the sun shone through the golden leaves creating the perfect memory to associate with my fragrance.
You can book a fragrance experience direct from The Perfume Studio or from Virgin Experiences and once you have created your perfume, the formula is kept online in your own fragrance library so you can re-order with ease whenever you want. Plus once you’ve had the opportunity to sample all of the scents on offer you can go online and create as many different perfumes as you desire. A Love Affair with Beauty perfume collection here I come!
